In Greg Blencoe’s excellent book The Supermanager: A Short Story About the Secrets of an Extremely Successful Manager we learn from an inspiring leader seven key leadership lessons.
But there is an eighth leadership lesson. One that is easily missed.
A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader. A great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves. – Lao Tzu
Learn From an Inspiring Leader
In addition to the seven key leadership lessons, Blencoe also shows us the importance of taking courage to approach people who inspire us.
In the story trainee manager Andrew Hernandez observed something remarkable in a fast food restaurant. The staff was happy, motivated and productive. He wanted to know why.
He wanted to learn from the manager so he asked for help.
When someone is successful ask for their help. Learn from their experience.
Leon Cook is the restaurant manager — The Supermanager — and Andrew’s impromptu developmental mentor. However, Leon didn’t tell Andrew what to do. He simply told him what he had learned from experience.
Be Inspired and Ask for Help
All you need to do is think of the inspiring leaders you meet everyday … and in any walk of life. What is it they do to impress you? What can you learn from them?
Is it the role they’re in or something they do to find the best in people? What makes them special?
Think about the things you could learn from them. What leadership skill or trait would you like to imitate? Now ask yourself this: Do you want to learn? Do you want to change?
If you answered yes, take courage and go speak to an inspiring leader and ask for their help.
Be inspired and do something remarkable!
Tell them your story. Tell them why you want their help. And tell them you want to learn.
The humble leader will hear you and help. But they won’t tell you what to do. They’ll show you what they learned and they will give you the confidence to succeed for yourself.
Go on! Be inspired and do something remarkable!
Do you know an inspiring leader who is brilliant, insightful and captivating?
Can you learn from an inspiring leader? Do you have courage to ask for help?
